Oral Hygiene Appointments & Preventive Dentistry

Too often overlooked, regular hygiene appointments are a crucial aspect of good oral health. During these visits, we’ll thoroughly clean and polish your teeth, using specialized tools to remove bacteria from the parts of your mouth that are hard to reach.

We’ll take x-rays of your entire mouth to identify any potential issues so we can treat them before they develop further. We also provide oral cancer screenings during our hygiene appointments to protect your health.

Finally, we make sure to educate all of our patients about proper oral care habits so they can successfully maintain their smile at home. We especially emphasize this with our younger patients, demonstrating effective brushing and flossing techniques while trying to establish the importance of oral health.

Tooth Extractions & Root Canal Therapy

While we always do our best to save your tooth, sometimes it just isn’t possible. If you have a tooth that’s damaged or decayed beyond the point of repair, Dr. Foust can perform gentle extractions.

We also offer root canal therapy to treat teeth with infected pulp tissue. This procedure involves creating an opening in your tooth to remove the infected tissue and sealing it with a durable material that helps to prevent further infection. Finally, we’ll cap your tooth with a dental crown to restore strength and appearance.

What should I eat after a tooth extraction?
Following a tooth extraction, you’ll want to eat soft foods and chew away from the surgical site. Examples of foods that can be eaten following an extraction include:

  • Blended soups served at a warm temperature, not hot
  • Protein shakes
  • Broths
  • Greek yogurt
  • Applesauce
  • Ice cream
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Scrambled eggs
  • Avocado
  • Smoothies
  • Cottage cheese
  • Instant oatmeal

You’ll want to avoid hot and spicy foods because they can dislodge the clot, putting your recovery at risk. You’ll also want to avoid drinking through a straw, alcohol, and smoking for the first 72 hours.

Is root canal therapy painful?
No, your tooth and the surrounding area will be numbed prior to the procedure and you won’t feel a thing. Following root canal therapy, it’s normal to feel some sensitivity. However, any discomfort should diminish within a few days and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers and a cold compress.
How long is a root canal therapy procedure?
Root canal therapy typically takes one to two appointments, each lasting about 45 minutes. The duration of the procedure depends on the extent of the infection and decay. For a more accurate time frame, we recommend contacting our office to schedule a consultation with one of our dentists by calling (724) 502-4221.

During the consultation, we’ll examine your oral health and provide you with a customized treatment plan that includes detailed information on the procedure, including the amount of time it will take to restore your tooth.

Why is oral hygiene important?
Good oral hygiene will not only keep your smile looking and feeling its best, but it will also keep it in the best of health. Studies have linked poor oral hygiene to serious health consequences such as:

  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Dementia

A good oral hygiene routine consists of brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing daily, and rinsing between meals. In addition to your oral health routine, you’ll want to visit our Gibsonia office for professional cleanings and checkups. During these appointments, we’ll ensure your mouth is in the best of health and let you know about any issues before they become problematic.
